The ninth annual State of Indian Nations Address, in coordination with the 2012 State of the Union Address, will take place Thursday, January 26 at 10:30 AM ET at The Newseum in Washington, DC.
The address, given by National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) President Jefferson Keel (Chickasaw Nation), will be presented to an audience of tribal leaders, Indian advocates, and government officials, as well as webcast live. The address will reflect on the current state of Native American citizens and tribal governments in the US, as well as outline key priorities for the federal government to consider in 2012. Congressman Tom Cole (R-OK), a tribal member from the Chickasaw Nation, will provide a Congressional response.
“It is important for the federal government, that has a trust responsibility to tribes, to hear from tribal governments about the state of Indian Country and tribal priorities for the upcoming year,” said former Senator Byron Dorgan, founder of the Aspen Institute’s Center for Native American Youth.
