College Athlete Union Leaders in Conversation at the Aspen Institute

April 2, 2014

In this ESPN video, former Northwestern University quarterback Kain Colter explains what inspired him to lead the charge to unionize college athletes.

College sports stands at a historic crossroads, due to a decision last week by a regional office of the National Labor Relations Board that football players at Northwestern University are in fact employees. The leaders of that movement are former Wildcat quarterback Kain Colter and Ramogi Huma, president of the College Athletes Players Association.

On April 3rd, Colter and Huma will join the Aspen Institute Sports and Society Program Director and ESPN reporter Tom Farrey for a moderated conversation. The event marks their first appearance together since Jan. 28th when they announced that the Northwestern players had signed union cards. Among other topics, Colter and Huma will be asked about their series of meetings over the past two days with legislative leaders in Washington. Also joining the dialogue will be Tom McMillen, former congressman and NBA player, Rhodes Scholar, and member of the Board of Regents for the University of Maryland.
