Is North America Becoming Energy Independent?
By Jeff Harris
Politicians often campaign on a promise to make America energy independent. This summer at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Shell Oil's Marvin Odum said the goal should really be North American energy independence. In a recent report, The North American Oil and Gas Renaissance and its Implications, our Energy and Environment Program looked at the key components of that independence. The report explores the causes behind this recent trend including new technology and sources like shale, the environmental issues, and global trade implications. Read the full report here.

Drilling for shale gas and more domestic oil does not create energy independence. It is sold overseas for many times what it would sell for here at home. Real energy independence means independence from fossil fuels altogether. We need large scale investments in renewables and collective divestment from the fossil fuel industry.
