Super Bowl XLVII is hardly the only event in football making news this week. Immediately following President Obama’s comments in The New Republic, suggesting he’d have been unlikely to allow a son to play the sport, the NFL Players’ Association announced a 10-year, $100 million project by Harvard University to treat, study and prevent injuries in the increasingly violent sport.

As the season for youth and high school football draws to a close, one could argue that it’s been one of the most memorable in history. But not for the reasons one might suspect such as spectacular displays of athleticism, broken records, classic rivalries, or nail-biting finishes. No, this season was memorable for the increased focus on player safety, especially regarding concussion.

Millions of Americans will sit down today to watch special NFL Thanksgiving day games. The safety of the players may not be at the top of their minds, but should it be? At a recent roundtable discussion we looked at the problem of concussions and other safety concerns in football at all levels, from Pee Wee to professional.

On the eve of the 2012 football season, ESPN ran a series of reports about health and safety issues facing the sport. My contribution was a television piece on a 13-year-old Pop Warner star whose neck was broken while playing in a Southern California championship game.
