Anne-Marie Slaughter was appointed Directory of Policy Planning by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on January 23, 2009. Dr. Slaughter comes to the Department of State from Princeton University where she served as Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs.

Prior to becoming Dean, she was the J. Sinclair Armstrong Professor of International, Foreign and Comparative Law and the Director of Graduate and International Legal Studies at Harvard Law School. She also taught at Harvard’s Kennedy School and the University of Chicago Law School. Dr. Slaughter earned an A.B. from Princeton University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and an M.Phil and D.Phil from Oxford University. Her doctoral dissertation examined “Conceptions of the German Question in West German Domestic Politics, 1975-1985.”
