Justice O’Connor became the first woman to serve on the US Supreme Court in 1981 and served on the bench for 24 years before retiring in January 2006.  Nominated by President Reagan, Justice O’Connor was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in August 2009.  Justice O’Connor is currently Chancellor of the College of William & Mary.
