Inaugural “7 Billion: Conversations that Matter:” The Population Factor and Economic Growth: Myths and Misconceptions

With Hans Rosling, Professor of International Health at the Karolinksa Institutet in Sweden and Director of Gapminder Foundation.

“The Population Factor and Economic Growth: Myths and Misconceptions”

Respondents:

The Honorable Maria Otero, Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, and Global Leaders Council for Reproductive Health member (ex officio); and Kavita Ramdas, Stanford University, and Chair of the Expert Working Group for the Global Leaders Council.

The population of the world is expected to reach 7 Billion next year, straining our already fragile planet and putting increasing pressure on both developed and developing economies. The population factor — and investments in reproductive health — are central to development and prosperity overall, yet we have lost ground in this critical area with 200 million people lacking access to reproductive health services. Evidence suggests that investments in reproductive health yield huge and profound returns in diverse areas including the environment, life span and GDP. Join world renowned statistician Hans Rosling as he takes us through a surprising and visually compelling and statistical exploration of the effects of population on global economic growth.

Made possible with generous support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the United Nations Foundation.
