US-China Forum on Arts and Culture

The Aspen Institute Arts Program is pleased to announce the first ever US-China Forum on Arts and Culture. Scheduled for November 16 – 19, 2011 in Beijing, China, the Forum will launch a series of cultural exchanges seeking to strengthen mutual understanding between Americans and Chinese. A terrific cast of American cultural representatives – Yo-Yo Ma, Meryl Streep, Joel Coen, Amy Tan, Alice Waters, Michael Pollan, and others – will collaborate and perform with their Chinese artistic counterparts at some of Beijing’s most breathtaking architectural venues such as the National Museum and the National Center for the Performing Arts (also known as the “Egg”.)

We see this is a vital opportunity for the Aspen Institute to bring the “Great Conversation” to China through cultural exchange. Moreover, it reaffirms the role of the arts at the Aspen Institute. Under the leadership of Damian Woetzel, the Arts Program will present art as ideas and as catalysts for action in civil society, as well as present great artists and art as the creative and brilliant forces they are in their own right. More programs with this vision are being developed and we are already in the preliminary stages of planning a return Forum with Chinese cultural representatives coming to Aspen, DC and/or New York in the next year. We hope this inaugural convocation in Beijing will be a bridge to other forms of cultural, intellectual, and policy exchanges between the Aspen Institute and China more generally.

This event is co-hosted by the Aspen Institute in partnership with the Asia Society’s Center on US-China Relations and it is by invitation only.

<--break->Patrons will participate with the elite group of artists and cultural leaders, and have access to all events, receptions, panels, luncheons, performances, and dinners. This is also a timely opportunity to celebrate and support the arts at the Aspen Institute by becoming a Founding Patron of the Arts Program under the leadership of Damian Woetzel. We hope you join us for what will be an unforgettable cultural journey.

This event is co-hosted by the Aspen Institute in partnership with the Asia Society’s Center on US-China Relations.
