The community college sector faces an urgent leadership challenge that also offers unprecedented opportunity. According to a recent survey by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), 500 community college presidents plan to retire by 2017. At the same time, the job of leading a college is becoming more demanding and complicated as calls for accountability increase, state budgets become more constricted, technology offers new ways of delivering education, and competition for students traditionally served by community colleges expands.
To respond to this perfect storm, Achieving the Dream and the Aspen Institute will host a convening to begin a robust exchange of ideas for bolstering community college leadership that advances student success. At the event, we will release a report on the community college presidency aimed at raising awareness of the crisis and the opportunity inherit in the looming leadership void and identifying steps that need to be taken to recruit and prepare leaders who can dramatically improve student success in an era of rapid change.
