Society of Fellows Winter Symposium: Vengeance and Forgiveness

*This event is by invitation only. This event is open to Society of Fellows members only.

Moderated by Carol Adelman, President, Movers & Shakespeares; and Joe Daniels, President and CEO, National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

Issues of violence engulf contemporary society, and we are constantly confronted with the choice between seeking vengeance or seeking forgiveness. This three-morning symposium invites participants to a deeper dialogue about this fundamental human dilemma. A close reading of Shakespeare’s The Tempest and a focus on the work of the 9/11 Memorial will frame the discussion. What are we to make of threats of terrorism at home and abroad? Questions of police brutality? Domestic abuse by professional athletes? From individuals to society, from underlying motivations to consequences, we’ll weigh Shakespeare’s assertion, “the rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance.” Through readings, multimedia presentations, lecture, and dialogue, the session offers a timely exploration of these timeless issues.

Please find the symposium agenda here.

Opening reception followed by three half-day sessions.
Fee: $495 participant; $295 auditor.
