The Economics-Countering Violent Extremism Nexus: Drivers and Solutions

This is a private (invitation only), off-the-record event.

Convened in partnership with the US Department of State, this workshop at the Aspen Institute will feature 40-50 high-level stakeholders in this space from the diplomatic community, the private sector, the US government, and research institutions, contributing their expertise and insights on the extent to which economic factors may cause extremism in various regions. Key questions will include:

  • Are there structural economic issues that make some countries more susceptible to extremism and/or extremist recruitment?
  • To what extent do factors such as unemployment, lack of skilled jobs, and/or poverty drive extremism?
  • Would improvements in financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, vocational training, and skills development help buffer against violent extremism?
