- Toolbox for American Diplomacy, moderated by Tara Sonenshine, former Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs for the Department of State

About AspenX: AspenX is a hybrid of virtual learning on the Khan Academy platform and in-person place-based learning through day-long seminars and convening organized by the Aspen Institute. We invite high school students to explore contemporary issues in an expert-moderated roundtable seminar, grounded in relevant readings and video lessons on the Khan Academy website. These video lessons, produced specifically for AspenX, are assembled from esteemed experts and practitioners including: Justice Ginsburg, Justice Anthony Kennedy, Colin Powell, Madeline Albright, and Aspen Institute President and CEO Walter Isaacson. This collaborative endeavor is designed to enhance the leadership capabilities of participants through stimulating dialogue and values-based introspection. This is a unique in-person learning opportunity for teens to enhance their knowledge and build their networking and leadership skills.

Your Privacy- Your Rights? – moderated by Jeffrey Rosen, President and CEO of the National Constitution Center; professor of law, The George Washington University
In our digital world, the tradeoff between our privacy and our rights is an issue that may be beyond our control. Should this change the way we live in the digital world? What are the ramifications? What are our rights? Constitutional expert Jeffrey Rosen will engage students in these questions and in an exploration of the changing landscape unfolding before us. How does the First Amendment Right to Free Speech relate to our digital lives? Should we all have the ”Right to be Forgotten” on the Internet? This seminar will be a fascinating look at something students deal with every day.
Toolbox for American Diplomacy – moderated by Tara Sonenshine, former Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs for the Department of State and previous Executive Vice President of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP).
In a world full of challenges, citizens are new and powerful actors who play a major role in how countries engage in the world and shape how countries relate to each other through foreign policy. This seminar examines U.S. foreign policy—a complex web of tactics, approaches and strategies that advance American interests, values and national security. How do you carry out American foreign policy? What tools does America have to extend its reach around the globe and protect its people? This seminar uses a “toolbox” approach as a way of unpacking the U.S. foreign policy instruments that can be used, alone, or in partnership with one another to advance our nation. Participants will explore traditional diplomacy, public diplomacy, digital diplomacy and cultural engagement to see how America utilizes old and new forms of safeguarding its values, interests and policies.

The tuition and seminar readings are free to all participants. Seminar readings and access to video lessons will be provided following the completion of registration. Registrations will not be taken at the door. All participants must submit an application with a reference and essay to participate.
