Aspen, CO, January 10, 2011–– The Aspen Institute is pleased to welcome students from Aspen High School’s “Model United Nations Club” who will give a presentation on their work on Thursday, January 20, 2011. The event will highlight a simulation of the proceedings at the United Nations, and will take place from 5:30-6:30 pm on the Aspen Institute campus in the Doerr-Hosier Center. It is free of charge and open to everyone.  Contributions are welcomed and are tax-deductible; all donations will help support the students’ trip to the University of Chicago Model United Nations Conference in February 2011. The students’ goal is to raise $5,000.

The Aspen Institute will host the event as part of its community outreach efforts in the local community.  “We are thrilled to be able to give these students a platform on which to show their community the great work they are doing,” noted Cristal Logan, Community Outreach Director at the Aspen Institute.  She added, “It’s impressive to see the large number of students who will represent Aspen at the Model UN Conference in Chicago, and I hope the community will show their support by attending the event.”

The Aspen High School Model United Nations Club has been operating for six years. Since 2004, club members have attended national Model UN conferences in New York, Chicago, and San Jose, Costa Rica. This academic year, the Aspen Model UN club has been invited to participate in the University of Chicago Model United Nations Conference February 3 – February 6, 2011. The conference sees 2,000 students from around the nation and world come to Chicago to participate. Aspen will be representing the nations Spain, Nauru, and Belarus. For more information about the Aspen High School Model United Nations Club please contact Matthew Wells, Aspen High School, 970-925-3760.

The Aspen Institute mission is twofold: to foster values-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussing and acting on critical issues. The Aspen Institute does this primarily in four ways: seminars, young-leader fellowships around the globe, policy programs, and public conferences and events. The Institute is based in Washington, DC; Aspen, Colorado; and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also has an international network of partners.
