The Aspen Institute Hosts Discussions with American Enterprise Institute Scholars

Aspen, CO, August 12, 2013 –– The Aspen Institute welcomes the president and scholars of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) for a series of discussions on key policy issues facing Washington. AEI president Arthur Brooks will lead a conversation on “The Secret to Happiness,” resident fellow Dan Blumenthal will discuss “The Three Chinas and the Future of the World,” and visiting scholar Phill Swagel will examine “Five Years Later – Controversial Key Decisions after the Financial Crisis.”  The event will be moderated by Ken Adelman and will take place from 9:00 – 11:15 AM on Friday, August 16 in the Paepcke Auditorium at the Aspen Institute. Tickets are $20 each and are on sale through Aspen Show Tickets. 

Daniel Blumenthal is the director of Asian Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, where he focuses on East Asian security issues and Sino-American relations. Dan has both served in and advised the US government on China issues for over a decade. From 2001 to 2004, he served as senior director for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia at the Department of Defense. Additionally, he served as a commissioner on the congressionally-mandated US-China Economic and Security Review Commission from 2006-2012, and held the position of vice chairman in 2007. He has also served on the Academic Advisory Board of the congressional U.S.-China Working Group. Dan is the co-author of An Awkward Embrace: The United States and China in the 21st Century (AEI Press, November 2012).

Arthur Brooks is the president of the American Enterprise Institute, occupying the Beth and Ravenel Curry Chair in Free Enterprise. Until 2009, Arthur was the Louis A. Bantle Professor of Business and Government Policy at Syracuse University, where his research focused on the intersections of economics, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy. Previously, Arthur spent 12 years as a professional French hornist with the City Orchestra of Barcelona and other ensembles. Arthur has written nine books, including The Battle: How the Fight Between Free Enterprise and Big Government will Shape America’s Future (Basic Books, 2010), Gross National Happiness (Basic Books, 2008), Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth about Compassionate Conservatism (Basic Books, 2006), and the graduate business textbook Social Entrepreneurship (Prentice-Hall, 2008). He is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Road to Freedom (Basic Books, 2012). He is a native of Seattle and currently lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife Ester and their three children.

Phillip Swagel is a visiting scholar at AEI. An economist and academic, Phill was assistant secretary for economic policy at the Treasury Department from 2006 to 2009, where he was responsible for analysis on a wide range of economic issues, including policies relating to the financial crisis and the Troubled Asset Relief Program. He also served as chief of staff and senior economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers and as an economist at the Federal Reserve Board and the International Monetary Fund. He is concurrently a professor of international economics at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy. He has previously taught at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, and Georgetown University. Phill works on both domestic and international economic issues at AEI. His research topics include financial markets reform, international trade policy, and the role of China in the global economy.
