China-Europe-U.S. Trialogue (August 2012, Aspen)
The Aspen Strategy Group, in conjunction with Aspen Institute Italia and the China Central Party School, convened the third annual China – Europe – U.S Trialogue in Aspen, CO from August 7-9, 2012. Experts and policy makers from the three parties engaged in discussions that sought to foster closer engagement among Europe, China, and the United States, promoting deeper understanding of the many shared global challenges and responsibilities. Following the first two convenings in Beijing in 2010 and Venice in 2011, participants divided into three working groups to discuss the three most urgent matters that define the trilateral relationship: shared responsibility for the international economy, including the global implications of the Eurozone crisis; Asia-Pacific security concerns, including non-proliferation and free navigation of the seas; and the Middle East/South Asia Zone of conflict, which poses significant geostrategic challenges for the three parties and offers a unique opportunity for cooperation on a host of challenges in a region in turmoil. Chinese, European and American Trialogue participants included distinguished members of the ASG, think tank experts and academics, as well as current and former senior government officials. The Trialogue provided an opportunity for participants to openly discuss and debate their differences and explore effective ways of confronting shared challenges to advance common goals and interests.
