Biography

Richard A. Falkenrath is a Senior Manager at Bridgewater Associates and the Shelby Cullom and Kathryn W. Davis Adjunct Senior Fellow for Counterterrorism and Homeland Security at the Council on Foreign Relations. Previously, he was Principal at the Chertoff Group LLC (2010-2014); Contributing Editor at Bloomberg Television (2010-2014); Deputy Commissioner of Counterterrorism at the New York City Police Department (2006-2010); a security analyst at the Cable News Network (CNN, 2005-2006); and the Stephen and Barbara Friedman Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution (2004-2006).  Dr. Falkenrath served on the White House staff from January 2001 until May 2004, first as Director for Proliferation Strategy on the National Security Council staff; then as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Policy and Plans within the Office of Homeland Security; then finally as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Homeland Security Advisor. Before the White House, he was Assistant Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. At the moment, he is also a Trustee of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI); a member of the Department of Defense’s Threat Reduction Advisory Committee (TRAC); a member of the Mission Committee of the Board of Governors of Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories; and a member of the Aspen Strategy Group. He is a summa cum laude graduate of Occidental College with degrees in Economics and International Relations. He holds a PhD from the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, where he was a British Marshall Scholar.
