FOCAS 2013: Beyond the Tools: Connecting Citizens and their Governments

Knight Foundation Logo

The 2013 Forum on Communications and Society (FOCAS), sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, convened July 10-13 in Aspen, Colorado to continue the work of the Aspen Institute and the Knight Foundation in encouraging an informed citizenry that is engaged in self-governance at all levels of government. Building on the recommendations and ideas of the 2012 FOCAS and the Knight News Challenges, this year's FOCAS roundtable brought together representatives of the maker community with public officials, citizen leaders and others who are implementing new open government tools and apps for citizen engagement. Participants explored some of the best examples and approaches with local leaders, officials and funders. By engaging in working groups and forum plenary sessions, the 2013 FOCAS participants looked for ways to institutionalize and measure the innovative techniques and talents for open governance in the future.

Plenary discussions can be viewed below or online at  Join the conversation on Twitter using hashtag #FOCAS13.
