The 2013 Forum on Communications and Society (FOCAS), sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will convene July 10-13 in Aspen, Colorado to continue the work of the Aspen Institute and the Knight Foundation in encouraging an informed citizenry that is engaged in self-governance at all levels of government.  Building on the recommendations and ideas of the 2012 FOCAS and the Knight News Challenges, this year's FOCAS roundtable will bring together representatives of the maker community with public officials, citizen leaders and others who are implementing new open government tools and apps for citizen engagement.  The aim is to explore some of the best examples and approaches with local leaders, officials and funders.  Ultimately, the 2013 FOCAS aims to enhance the relationships among localities and their publics through innovative, open approaches to governance and create the best recommendations for encouraging the adoption and integration of open government tools in citizens' lives.

Participation at the Forum is by invitation only, but the public is encouraged to view the plenary discussions online at www.aspeninstitute.tv and join the conversation on Twitter using hashtag #FOCAS13.
