Roundtable on Community Change

Current Work

The Aspen - Bermuda Partnership continuously works on initiatives that move towards a more racially equitable Bermuda. Listed below is our recent racial equity work.

Here are examples of some of the emerging publications that we are working on. We expect to complete these resources by Summer 2013. At that time, they will be available for review through our website.

Nonprofit Sector and Diversity Toolkit

This toolkit will help leaders in the nonprofit sector consider ways to increase diversity, equity, inclusion at the board and staff level.

Media and Race Best Practices Guide

This guide examines some of the most current thinking on the intersection of race and media practices. At the core of the document is a consideration of how to engage the media in a progressive conversation on race.

Recent Racial Equity Work

Freedom Riders Documentary Screening

The ABPRE periodically convenes individuals in social settings to discuss issues related to race and equity, carried out by our Community Building working group. Our most recent gathering was a screening of the documentary, Freedom Riders, which took place during the evening of April 19, 2012 at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. Freedom Riders chronicles the attempts of civil rights activists to desegregate interstate buses in the Southern United States in the early 1960s. A diverse cross section of Bermuda attended the screening and engaged in a discussion of the fight for civil rights in Bermuda and the United States. The group also actively discussed racial and social dynamics in contemporary Bermuda.

Leadership Seminar on Racial Equity, Diversity and Governance

On April 18, 2012 the Roundtable along with ABPRE convened the "Leadership Seminar on Racial Equity, Diversity and Governance" in Bermuda.  Similar to previous Roundtable seminars, it was designed to: 1) enable participants to reexamine the underlying assumptions, beliefs, and values that shape contemporary discussions on race; and 2) provide an opportunity to work with colleagues to apply these insights to challenges and opportunities related to governance and the representation of race in the non-profit sector. In all, 32 people attended from 21 organizations representing fields including health, the arts, youth and direct services. Most of the attendees were the heads of their organization or board chairs.

Leadership Seminar on Racial Equity and the Media

The Roundtable and the Aspen Bermuda Partnership on Racial Equity convened a Racial Equity Seminar for Bermudian leaders in the media on September 28 - 29th, 2011 in Bermuda. The seminar took place at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, where attendees represented the following areas: print journalism, on-line media, and television. Two media professionals from Jacksonville, Fl- Frank Denton and Michael Boylan- who are also Aspen Seminar alumni, co-facilitated the sessions. As a result of convening this group ABPRE created a point of entry into a larger discussion around how the media can be involved in a progressive conversation on race in Bermuda.
