Roundtable on Community Change

Structural Racism Policy Research

Structural Racism, Crime and Punishment: This project explores the interrelated political, economic, institutional, and cultural causes of racial disparities in the criminal justice system, as well as the connections between racism, community capacity, and criminal justice. With the support of the Open Society Institute, Roundtable assembled a diverse group of criminal justice reformers, social scientists, legal scholars, and rights advocates in June, 2007 to re-examine the nature and challenges of mass incarceration in the U.S. through the analytical lens of structural racism.

Publications and Resources:

  • Rethinking Crime and Punishment in the 21st Century (2008).

  • Meeting ReportRethinking Crime and Punishment for the 21st Century: Developing a Paradigm that Advances Racial Equity and Social Justice," June 2-5, 2007.(2008).

Structural Racism and Youth Development: The Roundtable has conducted research on the impact of structural racism on youth development in arenas such as juvenile justice and education. In addition, the Roundtable has designed a Racial Equity and Youth Development Seminar, which is based on the Racial Equity of Society Seminar but focuses on youth issues, such as public education and juvenile justice.

Publications and Resources:

  • Racial Equity and Youth Development Curriculum (2006).
  • Structural Racism and Youth Development (2005).

Articles on Race and Community Revitalization: Papers produced for a planning conference for the Roundtable Race Project held in November of 1998 can be found here.
