On June 8, 2011, Lisa Mensah delivered opening remarks at the National Academy of Social Insurance’s (NASI) “Envisioning the Future of Social Insurance in a Competitive Economy” Policy Seminar.  The seminar coincided with NASI’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, and addressed issues including whether social insurance is the best way to manage the risks associated with retirement, and how these risks could be managed in a way that promotes economic dynamism and growth.

Lisa Mensah, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Initiative on Financial Security (Aspen IFS), moderated the “Savings: The Future of Microfinance” plenary session at the 2011 Microfinance USA conference.  The two-day conference, which took place May 23-24, 2011 in New York City, convened over 800 of the nation’s leading microfinance champions to exchange ideas and information that set the agenda for the future of the field. 

On May 17, 2011 The Aspen Institute Initiative on Financial Security (Aspen IFS) hosted The Fiscal Future of the United States, an off-the-record roundtable  with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Jacob J. Lew.  The broad-ranging conversation, moderated by David Leonhardt, Pulitzer prize-winning journalist from The New York Times, paid particular attention to the prospects for short-term budgetary and fiscal reform as part of any bargain to raise the debt ceiling, while also exploring the Obama Administration’s longer-term deficit reduction efforts and the potential for bipartisan comprehensive spending and revenue reform in the coming years. 

On April 15, 2011, The Aspen Institute Initiative on Financial Security (Aspen IFS) hosted Savings to Last a Lifetime: The Changing Needs of American Retirees, an executive roundtable discussion on options to improve retirement security in today’s changing landscape.  Over 50 executive-level participants gathered, including consumer advocates, pension experts, industry leaders, and policymakers, to focus on new ways to help Americans’ savings stretch though retirement.

On March 30, 2011, Lisa Mensah delivered opening remarks at the Consumer Federation of America's National Forum to Encourage Lower-Income Household Savings.  The Forum convened leading savings advocates from around the country who reflected on their local efforts to increase savings during America Saves Week 2011, which ran from February 20-27, 2011.

On March 3, 2011, the Aspen Institute held a fireside chat at its Aspen, CO headquarters featuring Michal Barr, United States Treasury Department and Former Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions.  As Assistant Secretary, Barr was a chief architect in the reform of our nation’s financial system, a trusted counsel on numerous issues to Secretary Geithner, and a driving force behind the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

On January 28, 2011, Lisa Mensah, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Initiative on Financial Security (Aspen IFS),  was a expert panelist at the Congressional Black Caucus’s (CBC) Budget Deficit Commission in the Cannon House Office Building.  

On January 25, 2011, the Aspen Institute Initiative on Financial Security (Aspen IFS) hosted a Congressional briefing, “Making it Last: Workable Solutions for Lifelong Retirement Policy” on Capitol Hill.

Moderated by Lisa Mensah, Executive Director of Aspen IFS, the briefing brought together leading pension experts and financial services representatives for a deep conversation on both the opportunities and challenges that face policymakers working towards solutions to help more Americans manage their nest-eggs through retirement.  Panelists included Jeff Cimini of Fidelity Investments Life Insurance Company, Cindy Hounsell of Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement, Mark Iwry of the U.S. Treasury, Jamie Kalamarides of Prudential Retirement, Pamela Perun of Aspen IFS, and David Wray of the Profit Sharing/401(k) Council of America.

On December 17, 2010, the Aspen Institute Initiative on Financial Security (Aspen IFS) hosted a panel discussion, “Shared Sacrifice: Debating the Contours of U.S. Deficit Reduction.”  Moderated by David Leonhardt, a columnist for the New York Times, the event featured panelists Dean Baker, Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research; Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform; Andy Stern, Senior Research Fellow at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute and Presidential Appointee to the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform; Gene Steuerle, Richard B. Fisher Chair and Institute Fellow at the Urban Institute; and Lisa Mensah, Executive Director of Aspen IFS. 

On November 30, 2010, Lisa Mensah, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Initiative on Financial Security (Aspen IFS) spoke at the Opportunity Funding Corporation’s (OFC) Economic Stabilization White Paper Series Launch.  The White Paper Series recommends post-crisis policy proposals to repair the foreclosure crisis and rebuild wealth in America’s communities of color.
