Why Culture and Security?

The 2009 Aspen Cultural Diplomacy Forum was organized under the theme of Culture and Security. This theme had been selected for the 2009 Forum for the following reasons:
Premise: Culture can be both a useful tool and a dangerous weapon, making it a central security concern. This is not only because many contemporary conflicts have significant cultural dimensions, but also because arts and culture resources can be powerful tools for employment creation, mutual understanding, conflict resolution, appreciation of diversity, peace-building, and sustainable security. Thus, investment in understanding and acting on the cultural aspects of conflict could quell emotional tensions and help save lives. Equally, cultural activity can be an important tool in the rehabilitation of communities and individuals recovering from conflict, natural disasters, and wars.
Problem: There is an insufficient awareness of the interdependence of culture, socio-economic development, peace, and security. This situation undermines security-related efforts in a globalized world in need of continued dialogue and peaceful co-existence.
Goal: The goal of this forum was to engage today's and tomorrow's leaders in the discussion and the development of approaches, mechanisms, and actions that use arts, culture, and humanities as the keystone in effectively addressing and anticipating human rights and global security issues.
