The Problem

The need for universal access to reproductive health is urgent. Every year more than half a million women die during childbirth or from pregnancy related complications. Saving these lives requires access to comprehensive reproductive health care services, enabling women to go safely through pregnancy and childbirth with the best chance of having a healthy infant.

Comprehensive care includes access to family planning, to fulfill parents’ basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children. Currently there are 215 million women worldwide want to delay or avoid their next pregnancy but are not using modern family planning methods.  In addition to being the right thing to do, investing in women and families is the smart thing to do, spurring a range of development benefits across the national economy and security, distribution of natural resources, and the environment.

In 2010, sixteen world leaders came together to form The Global Leaders Council for Reproductive Health. Chaired by former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, this group is committed to advancing reproductive health for lasting development and prosperity by working to mobilize the political will and financial resources necessary to achieve universal access to reproductive health. In 2011, they launched The Resolve Award.
