- Aspen Homeland Security Group Releases Report on The Role of DHS in the Intelligence Community [January 18, 2012]
On January 18, 2012, the Aspen Homeland Security Group announced the release of its first paper, "Homeland Security and Intelligence: Next Steps in Evolving the Mission," which examines the role that the Department of Homeland Security can and should play in the intelligence community. This paper was released during a hearing before the Terrorism, HUMINT, Analysis, and Counterintelligence (THACI) Subcommittee of U.S. House of Representatives' Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI). The former Deputy Director of the FBI's National Security Branch and Deputy Director of the CIA's Counterterrorist Center Philip Mudd testified. Former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff and former Deputy National Security Advisor for Combating Terrorism Juan Zarate served as witnesses before the subcommittee.
- Winter Meeting on the International Role of the Department of Homeland Security at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars [January 17, 2012]
The Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Ret. General James Jones, and Director John McLaughlin talked about homeland security and efforts to engage the international community. They discussed transportation security, cyber threats, and efforts to combat violent extremist groups. General Jones in his comments said that 2012 was the year that the U.S. would have to deal with Iran "one way or the other." The program included questions to the panel from the audience.
