Tasia Providence is one of the newly inducted Master Educators for the District of Columbia Public Schools. In an effort to become the highest-performing school district in the nation, the District of Columbia Public Schools system will launch a new teacher evaluation system in the fall of 2009 with Master Educators at the front lines, serving as third party impartial evaluators of teacher quality as well as providing support to educators who need assistance.
Ms. Providence accepted this promotion after teaching for five years with DCPS at Malcolm X Elementary School in the Congress Heights area of southeast Washington, DC. Ms. Providence started teaching through the DC Teaching Fellows Program in 2004 and has taught grades two through five. In 2005 she was given the distinct privilege of “looping” with her second grade students based on her commitment to high-quality instruction and her track record of success in increasing student achievement.
Not only has Ms. Providence had the opportunity to educate children, she has also served as a cooperating teacher for novice teachers through the DC Teaching Fellows Program and the Howard University School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
As an educator and an active member of her school community, Ms. Providence was a member of the Washington Teachers Union-AFT and served on several committees, including the School Chapter Advisory Committee, Local School Restructuring Team, Representative Assembly, and Personnel Committee from 2005 to 2009.
Ms. Providence graduated from American University with a Masters in the Art of Teaching degree and earned a Bachelors degree in Politics from Mount Holyoke College.
