Some of today’s largest foundations are going to great lengths to transform American society in unprecedented ways. Yet surprisingly, they don’t expect -- and actually work to stymie -- criticism of such efforts.
“How will volunteers support this initiative?”
Simply posing that question to potential grantees would cause organizations to think about the role of volunteers in their work, and might even open minds and opportunities, according to
Shirley Sagawa of the Center for American Progress.
In 2008, hundreds of thousands of citizens engaged in the political process, some mobilizing others to vote for the first time.
Foundation officers often mistakenly seek to apply scientific principles to complex social problems. And, civil society is endangered by an increasing market mentality on the part of new nonprofit leaders, says Stanford University’s Bruce Sievers.
Life ain’t fair. Foundations pay full value to the for-profit consultants who advise them, but often fail to cover the true costs of the same services when offered by non-profits.
School may be out for the summer, but there’s no break for ideas and debate about the best -- and worst -- ways for funders to help fix America’s education system. Certainly engaging with policymakers is critical. In a later post, I’ll discuss the issue of foundations’ increasing interest in and effort to influence education policy.
Did foundations do enough in the economic recession? Clearly it is too early to say.
Many were thrilled to see that the Kellogg Foundation had made a $75-million commitment to attacking racial disparities in communities across the country.
