Participants from around the U.S. and six other countries convened in Aspen during President's Day Weekend for the 2012 Socrates Winter Seminars. Roundtable discussions were led by Socrates moderators Stephen Balkam on Social Media, Mark Brownstein on the Future of Energy, and Mona Eltahawy on the Middle East and North Africa.
Participants chose one of five seminars offered on July 2-5 in Aspen, CO: China and America, Soft Power, The Great Conversation, Islam and Politics, and Privacy and Democracy. The Annual Socrates Dinner, which featured David Gergen, Kasim Reed, and Michelle Rhee, was held on Saturday, July 3. Click here to visit the 2010 Socrates Dinner page.
Afghanistan and Pakistan: Short-Term Crises vs. Long-Term problems
The seminar will explore the background to America’s present military engagement in Afghanistan and our relationship over the last decade to nuclear-armed but unstable Pakistan. It will examine mistaken priorities and misplaced resources, and also how The U.S. failed to take into account the costs, complexity, and duration of military and political commitments to both states, as well as America’s lack of understanding of deeper social, cultural, and ideological trends in both states.
