January 2008

  • Commission Joins Groups for Panel on Capitol Hill
    The Commission along with nine different co-sponsors, held a discussion between Congressional and Administrative leaders on NCLB reauthorization. Education and community leaders from across the nation, who experience the high cost of waiting for needed improvements to the law, formed a second panel.

  • Governor Roy E. Barnes, Co-Chair for the Commission on No Child Left Behind, testified at a bicameral hearing entitled, "Elementary and Secondary Education Act Reauthorization: Improving NCLB to Close the Achievement Gap," on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at 9:30 AM in 2175 Rayburn House Office Building.  In his testimony, Governor Barnes outlined the Commission's recommendations for strengthening No Child Left Behind that were released on February 13th in the report Beyond NCLB: Fulfilling the Promise to Our Nation's Children.
    This hearing, hosted by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and the House Education and Labor Committee, included testimonies from other key education leaders: Elizabeth Burmaster, Council of Chief State School Officers; Mike Casserly, Council of Great City Schools; Wade Henderson, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights; Ed McElroy, American Federation of Teachers; Arthur Rothkopf, Business Coalition for Student Achievement; and Reg Weaver, National Education Association.

  • Commissioner Chris Edley spoke at the National Lieutenant Governors Association Winter Meeting entitled, "Reauthorization: No Child Left Behind," on Wednesday March 14, 2007, from 11:00 AM - 12:25 PM.  This meeting was moderated by Lt. Governor John Cherry and the panel includes the following: U.S. Representative Dale Kildee, House Committee on Education and Subcommittee on Early Childhood and Elementary and Secondary Education; U.S. Department of Education Deputy Secretary Ray Simon; Dr. Christopher Edley, Jr., Commission on No Child Left Behind; and National Education Association President Reg Weaver.  In his testimony, Commissioner Edley emphasized the Commission's key recommendations that were released on February 13, 2007.

February 2007

  • February 13th rollout event: presented 75 recommendations to the President, Congress and the public; held 12 public hearings and roundtables where we heard from nearly 80 witnesses representing hundreds, thousands and even millions of people affected by the law; visited schools, wrote profiles of schools and districts, and researched and analyzed extensive amounts of data; received over 10,000 comments from the public via our Web site.
