The Aspen Institute and the African Wildlife Foundation are teaming up to present a special, indeed extraordinary seminar about African wildlife and wildlands conservation in the context of African politics and equitable development. We are not aware that anything like it has ever been offered by anyone, and certainly not in one of the foremost areas for wildlife viewing on earth.
Participants will arrive in Johannesburg by the evening of October 9, 2008. After a day with guest presentations by world-reknowned experts and a guided tour of the city and Soweto, we will fly to the Singita lodges in South Africa's Kruger National Park - widely regarded as among the best, if not the very best, safari lodges in Africa, the site of some of the continent's most dramatic landscapes, and unsurpassed animal viewing. These remote and idyllic locations, with the highest standards of luxury - and all reserved for our exclusive use - will provide the backdrop for compelling dialogue centered around wildlife conservation, and models of sustainable economic development in Africa that build on its resources rather than destroy them. Between expertly moderated discussions based on advance texts, presentations by guest African speakers who will be our guests throughout, some of Africa's most experienced guides will lead participants on twice-daily safari drives that promise to be unforgettable. The group will return to Johannesburg on October 15, in time for international flights home, or to continue their African adventure.
Advance non-binding registrations are currently being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis; slots are expected to sell out quickly, so please contact Donna Horney at donna.horney@aspeninstitute.org or 410-820-5339 to reserve a space or for more information. Participant fee is $12,000 based on double occupancy. *Limited singles available - $2,400 supplemental fee.
