Henry Crown Leadership Award
Each year, the program honors an outstanding business leader whose achievements exemplify the high ideals of honor, integrity, industry, and philanthropy that were the hallmarks of Henry Crown's career. The award, presented at the Aspen Institute's annual gala benefit dinner in New York, carries a stipend which is donated by the Henry and Gladys Crown Charitable Trust Fund to the charity or charities of the recipient's choice.
In 1997 Robert W. Galvin, chairman of the executive committee of Motorola, Inc., was presented with the first Henry Crown Leadership Award. Mr. Galvin has been a senior mentor of the Henry Crown Fellowship Program.
The 1998 Henry Crown Leadership Award was presented to Norman R. Augustine, former vice chairman and chief executive officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation and Professor at Princeton University.
The 1999 Henry Crown Leadership Award recipient was Gen. Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.), founding chairman of America's Promise - The Alliance for Youth and current U.S. Secretary of State.
The 2000 Henry Crown Leadership Award was presented to Sen. George J. Mitchell, former Majority Leader of the United States Senate.
The 2001 Henry Crown Leadership Award honoree was Dr. William J. Perry, a professor at Stanford University, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, and co-director of the Preventative Defense Project. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Perry served as the 19th Secretary of Defense for the United States from 1994 to 1997.
Former President Jimmy Carter received the 2002 Henry Crown Leadership Award. Mr. Carter, thirty-ninth president of the United States, is a humanitarian whose life has been defined by faith and devotion to service. In October 2002 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on global human rights issues. He currently chairs the Carter Center and is also a longtime volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.
In 2003, the Henry Crown Leadership Award was given to Patty Stonesifer, Co-Chair and President of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Through her work, Patty exemplifies the kind of community spirited leadership that embodied Henry Crown's own career.
The 2004 award was given to Michael Powell, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. A member of the TripleCrown Class, Michael is the first Henry Crown Fellow to receive this award.
