36th Annual Aspen Summer Words - Solazú Celebrating Stories from Latin America and the Caribbean
June 17-22, 2012. Aspen, CO. This year's festival, "Solazú," will celebrate the rich literary heritage of our neighbors to the south: Latin America and the Caribbean. Traveling the spine, seas and islands of the Americas, Aspen Summer Words 2012 will explore one of the most ancient and diverse regions on the planet. With leading Latin American and Caribbean authors at the helm, our festival will traverse vast distances, 14 millennia, 51 territories, 6500 miles, and more than 1000 languages to reveal the soulful stories that unite us all. Festival Presenters include Daniel Alarcón, Gioconda Belli, Edwidge Danticat, Francisco Goldman, Romero Lubambo, Orlando Patterson, Luís Pérez, Luís J. Rodriguez, Luís Torres, Luis Alberto Urrea, and Claudia Villela.

Great Read Aspen Writers' Foundations Presents The Great Read
June 17-22, 2012. Aspen, CO. Now in its fourth year, The Great Read is an Aspen Writers' Foundation initiative designed to get as many people as possible reading and talking about the same literary works at the same time. This spring, the Great Read shines a spotlight on modern Latin America and the Caribbean through a sampling of short fiction, narrative nonfiction, poetry, and song, centered on themes of immigration, assimilation and alienation. The 2012 Great Read reading list features authors Luis Alberto Urrea, Edwidge Danticat, and Gioconda Belli, as well as the songs of Perla Batalla. The program continues into June, culminating with the 2012 Aspen Summer Words Literary Festival, titled Solazú: Celebrating the Stories of Latin America and the Carribbean.

Aspen Environment Forum 2012 Aspen Environment Forum
June 22-25, 2012. Aspen CO. For the last four years, the Aspen Institute and National Geographic have joined forces on the Aspen Environment Forum to gather a broad spectrum of key thought leaders for rich and engaging dialogue on the challenges of reconciling Earth's finite resources with its ability to sustain our expanding human needs. For the 5th year of the Forum, our theme will be Living in the New Normal and is based on the science from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) recently released climate "normals"; for the US, which documents that the country's long-term average temperature has warmed by half a degree in the last decade.

2012 Aspen Ideas Festival
June 27-July 3, 2012. Aspen, CO. Entering its eighth year, the Aspen Ideas Festival will gather some of the most interesting thinkers and leaders from around the US and abroad to discuss their work, the issues that inspire them, and their ideas. Michèle Flournoy McCloskey Speaker Series: In collaboration with the Aspen Strategy Group, US Foreign Policy Challenges: A Conversation with Michèle Flournoy and Anne-Marie Slaughter
August 7, 2012. Aspen, CO. Michèle Flournoy served as under secretary of defense for policy in the Obama Administration, and was the principal adviser to the Secretary of Defense in the formulation of national security and defense policy, oversight of military plans and operations, and in National Security Council deliberations. Anne-Marie Slaughter served as director of policy planning for the US State Department (2009 – 11), the first woman to hold that position. She is the Bert G. Kerstetter ‘66 university professor of politics and international affairs at Princeton University, and was the dean of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
