 In partnership with the Shakespeare Theatre Company, the Aspen Institute Arts Program screens "Joe Papp in Five Acts," an acclaimed documentary profiling the legendary director of “Shakespeare in the Park,” Joseph Papp, his collaborations with celebrated actors including Kevin Kline and Meryl Streep, and his efforts to expand access to theater on the simple premise, “We have public libraries, why not public theaters?” Following the film, Shakespeare Theatre Company Artistic Director Michael Kahn joins Arts Program Director Damian Woetzel to discuss democracy in the arts, and Papp’s role in the evolution of theater as a force for social justice.

Admiral Dennis BlairKey Threats: US Readiness in Perilous Times
November 28, 2011, 12:00-1:30 pm, The Aspen Institute, Washington, DC. Admiral (Ret.) Dennis Blair served as Director of National Intelligence from January 2009 to May 2010. He led sixteen national intelligence agencies, administering a budget of $50 billion and providing integrated intelligence support to the President, Congress and operations in the field. From 2003 to 2006, Admiral Blair was president and chief executive officer of the Institute for Defense Analyses. During his Navy career, Admiral Blair served as Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command. Ashore, he served as Director of the Joint Staff and held budget and policy positions on the National Security Council and several major Navy staffs.

George Stevens, Jr. The Washington Ideas Roundtable Series: Creativity in America
October 19, 2011, 12:00-1:30 pm, The Aspen Institute, Washington, DC. George Stevens, Jr. has created a legacy of distinguished work as a writer, director, and producer of motion pictures and television. As a writer and producer Stevens has earned 11 Emmys, two George Foster Peabody Awards for Meritorious Service to Broadcasting, and nine awards from the Writers Guild of America. Currently, Stevens is producing the thirty-second annual “Kennedy Center Honors,” a feature length documentary on the famed political cartoonist Herb Block. Moderated by Damian Woetzel, Director of the Aspen Institute Arts Program.
