The Constitution and the Politics of Religious Bigotry

Acrimonious public disputes over religious practices and the law have erupted with grim regularity in recent years, threatening America’s tradition of pluralism and tolerance.  Michael Gerson of the Washington Post, Asma Uddin of The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, and Justice and Society Program Director Meryl Chertoff discussed several topics in this ongoing national conversation, including developments on college campuses, restrictions on religious garb, “anti-Sharia” ballot initiatives, and the siting of religious institutions.
