March 30 is Vincent Van Gogh’s birthday, and in his honor we share one of his most beloved works, “Almond Blossom.” Painted for the nursery of his new nephew, the blossoming flowers represent the beginning of new life, the coming spring, renewal of spirit. Struggling with mental health throughout his life, the joy and whimsy of Van Gogh’s works is a testament to resilience and perseverance. In a letter announcing the birth of his nephew to Vincent, his brother Theo wrote, “As we told you, we’ll name him after you, and I’m making the wish that he may be as determined and as courageous as you.” What brings you a sense of renewal? To Van Gogh, celebration and the courage to persevere looks like almond blossoms. What does it look like to you?
