Wild Geese, by Wendell Berry

Meditation

There are moments when time seems to stand still, where the normal markers of past and present seem less pronounced. Or rather, when past and present come together in the joyous expectation of the future. This is not a negation of suffering or pain, but a resolution which points towards promise, a clarity that emerges so as to anchor us in the beauty of the moment and which evokes a quietness of heart before an uncertain future. Wendell Berry’s poem points us to the future with the elegance and purpose of flying geese. And he reminds us that we have already what we need to stand firm in faith, hope, and love.

What are the simple experiences or sensations that ground you? What are names of those who, in life or death, remind you of your better self? What are the seeds of promise around you, and to what ancient faith do you appeal? Where do you go to be reminded that, even in imperfection, you are enough?
