Sharing Shakespeare 3.0: Parents and Children

Douglas Peckham and Dipika Rai will moderate this discussion on the relationships between parents and children in Shakespeare. Love and betrayal take on tragic proportions when applied to parents and children in both Hamlet and King Lear. Kingdoms and families are destroyed. Would family counselling have helped? Why do Fathers distrust the child that loves them best? Is Hamlet in love with his mother? Why would children betray the parent who loves them? What role does sibling rivalry play? Is the desire for power stronger than the family bond? Why can’t parents and children see the truth about each other?

Readings: Hamlet, King Lear
