Falstaff In Depth: Who Is He?
What is the role of Falstaff in the two Shakespeare plays, Henry IV, parts one and two? Who is this character? Tragic, comic, tragi-comic, likable, pitiable, despicable, ridiculous, ingenuous? In this session, Fred Venrick and Cathy O’Connell will guide participants through an exploration of why Falstaff was one of Queen Elizabeth’s favorites and why Harold Bloom considers him—along with Hamlet—one of Shakespeare’s greatest characters. What was the relationship between Falstaff and Henry IV and what imprint did it have on the future king? Readings will include Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2.
