Aspen Institute Continues Speaker Series at Aspen High School
Aspen, CO, November 5, 2007 — The Aspen Institute announced today the first speaker in its Speaking to the Future Series, part of its overall collaboration with the Aspen School District.
The Speaking to the Future Series features speakers associated with the Institute. They will share insights on their work and their perspectives on the future. “The series is part of our ongoing effort to share our resources with local students,” explained Cristal Logan, director of Community Programs for the Institute. “It’s a win-win for everyone. The speakers so enjoy connecting with the students because they ask great, probing questions; and we are thrilled to share our resources with a broader audience. We have also invited residents of the Pitkin County Senior Center to hear the speakers and join us for lunch,” she added.
This year’s series will kick off on Wednesday, November 7, 2007, with Lee Bycel, executive director of the Western Region of American Jewish World Service, which works to alleviate poverty, hunger, and disease in the developing world regardless of the people’s race, religion, or nationality. Lee Bycel’s devotion to aiding people in need is demonstrated by his former position of senior advisor to the Global Strategy of International Medical Corps and his recent trips to Darfur, Chad, and Rwanda. Bycel was also the Aspen High School commencement speaker earlier this year.
Dr. Bycel’s topic is “Global Responsibility: Caring for people around the world: Responsibility, Choice, or Imperative?” The event takes place during the high school’s lunch period. Lunch will be served.
Past speakers in the series include Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Martin J. Sherwin, science historian David Bisno, and energy expert Philip K Verleger.
The Series takes place in the Seminar Room at Aspen High School, from 11:40 AM to12:10 PM, and will be filmed and aired by Grassroots Television, Channel 12. More information is available at (970) 544-7929.
