ASPEN INSTITUTE TO HOST SUE MATTHEWS
IN CONCERT PERFORMING “SONGS OF JUDY”
Queenstown, MD, October 14, 2010 – The Aspen Institute will host a fall concert featuring Sue Matthews performing The Songs of Judy, a celebration of the career of Judy Garland. The concert will take place on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 3:00 pm at the Institute’s Wye Woods Conference Center in Queenstown, MD. The Songs of Judy celebrates an evening of great songs including, The Man That Got Away, Zing! Went The Strings of My Heart, The Trolley Song, Over the Rainbow, and many more of Judy’s favorites.
Sue Matthews’ career has taken her to the top jazz clubs, concert halls, and music festivals. She has been the featured performer with many orchestras from the Calgary Philharmonic to the Florida Symphony in Tampa. Her international appearances have taken her from Argentina to Hungry, and from Holland to Ireland. Matthews is thrilled to share this powerful performance highlighted by the ‘story’ she tells of Judy Garland’s career threaded throughout the evening.
Musical Director Stef Scaggiari is a pianist/composer whose music has been heard every Sunday on NPR’s Weekend-End Edition since 1988. He has appeared as the featured soloist with many major orchestras including The Kansas City Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Calgary Symphony, and the Annapolis Symphony. His international performances have taken him from the Saluzzo Festival in Italy, to the European Music Festival in Turkey, and the Heiniken Festival in Holland, just to name a few. While under contract with Concord Records, Scaggiari toured Japan with the Carol Sloan Group, the Modern Jazz Quartet, the Count Basie All-Stars, and the Mel Torme Group. Scaggiari also was featured at the Monterey Jazz Festival in California.
The Aspen Institute mission is twofold: to foster values-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussing and acting on critical issues.
