Aspen, CO, December 10, 2012 — The Aspen Institute continues its series on Renaissance Rome with a seminar in Aspen this December. The Fireside Chat, moderated by Ken Adelman, will feature world-class experts Bill Cook, Jeremy Hartnett, and Ross King.  They will discuss aspects of Rome that have endured: architecture, religion, sculpture, politics, painting, commerce, and law. While Ross specializes in art and architecture, Bill in Roman government and the church, Jeremy specializes in the social and economic life of ancient Romans – aspects of all carry over to our lives in modern times. The Fireside Chat will be followed by a book signing featuring Ross King and his newly released work Leonardo and the Last Supper (Walker & Company, 2012) as well as Bill Cook and his latest book The Medieval World View (Oxford University Press, 2012). This event will take place from 5:30 – 6:30 PM on December 13th 2012 in the Lauder Room of the Koch Building on the Institute’s Aspen Meadows campus in Aspen, CO. Tickets are $10 each in advance and $15 at the door and are on sale through Aspen Show Tickets at the Wheeler Opera House. As a full-capacity audience is expected for this program, early ticket purchasing is encouraged. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the start of the event.

Bill Cook is the familiar voice of the Renaissance, in his celebrated lectures for the Teaching Company. Former professor of History at SUNY Geneseo and author of five books on the Renaissance, Cook has taught on Michelangelo, the Medici, and Renaissance Florence for the past 40 years.

Jeremy Hartnett is an associate professor and chair of the Classics department at Wabash College. He has also served as an Annual Lecturer the Archaeological Institute of America.

Ross King has written a number of best-selling books on the Renaissance, including Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling and Brunelleschi’s Dome

Why Goethe? Why 1949? Why Aspen?

Something very strange happened in Aspen in the summer 1949 (exactly sixty years ago). Even though there were very few hotel rooms, 2000 people came here. They came from every state except for two, and they came from 11 different countries. Come find out who came; what they were so “worked up” about, and why Time Magazine featured this unusual meeting in Aspen, Colorado as its cover story on July 11, 1949!  After seeing this multi-media presentation, you will have a new understanding of the “big bang” that caused Aspen to be the unique spiritual, cultural, intellectual and recreational center that it is today. Featuring Steve Wickes, former Director of the Society of Fellows at the Aspen Institute.
Doerr-Hosier Center, Aspen Meadows.
