The Aspen Institute Presents Photographs by Michael Lipkin in Paepcke Gallery

Aspen, CO, July 15, 2013 – The Aspen Institute is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of photographic works by Michael B. Lipkin on view in the Paepcke Gallery. The show, entitled Poetics of Space will run through September 5 and is free and open to the public from 9am – 5pm Monday through Friday during this time. There is an opening reception for the artist on July 16 from 4-6pm.

This exhibit, which includes 14 color photographs all made during the artist’s travels to Italy & New York, explores the transformative power of iconic, civic architectural space and the sensory perception of being there. The soft-focus photographs re-create the visceral, subjective experience of being within a great space, empowered by its architecture and history. Form and mass is deconstructed into light, time and movement in pursuit of its structure and purpose, its genius loci, it’s a sense of place and possibility.

Lipkin explains, “I attempt to capture the extended moment of the interaction between architectural space and human experience – where the subject and the object collide and the architectural object is transformed into a sustained subjective experience for the viewer. This work is the opposite of still photography, not only are the images active, the process is active as well. I am constantly adjusting shutter speed, aperture, focus, and focal length – often these adjustments are made during long exposures. I am seldom standing still. I move through the space, experiencing the space. The photographs are minimally cropped with no post-production manipulation of images.”

Michael Lipkin is an architect, designer, photographer, video artist, and sculptor. He received his undergraduate degree in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Architecture degree from Yale. The artist is based in Aspen. He is represented by 212 Gallery in Aspen and the Kim Foster Gallery in New York.
