Washington, D.C., November 15, 2018 —The 2018 midterm elections brought about considerable change that will impact the future of education policy. Twenty new Governors and hundreds of new state legislators were elected. These new state leaders will have a tremendous amount of responsibility and authority over education policy, but with limited institutional knowledge at their disposal and many competing demands from other policy priorities. A remarkable 22 states have had new state education chiefs since 2016 alone and our education debates are more partisan than ever before.
With that in mind, The Aspen Institute Education & Society Program worked with leaders from the left and right, from communities, schools and statehouses, to create new resources for policymakers to better design education policy. These tools for policymakers flip the traditional approach to education policy and instead put the needs of parents, students and the state’s workforce front and center, while bringing a focus on true equity in education.
These resources are co-branded by organizations including The Bush Institute, Education Commission of the States, the Council of Chief State School Officers, The Council of State Governments, Education Strategy Group, Education Reform Now, TeachPlus, and RISE Colorado, among others. The Education & Society Program will unveil and discuss these tools at an event “The Changing of the Guard: New Opportunities for Education Leadership” on Wednesday, December 12, featuring expert speakers who helped design these new resources.
