Washington D.C., April 5, 2019 – The Aspen Institute’s Executive Committee and Board of Trustees today approved Aspen New Zealand as the newest International Partner of the Aspen Institute.
Aspen New Zealand will be a non-partisan and non-ideological body which embraces the mission of the Institute to foster enlightened leadership that can make a moral and intellectual contribution to the development of society in New Zealand and around the world. It will foster leadership based on enduring values and provide non-partisan forums for dealing with critical issues that matter to New Zealanders for all New Zealanders. Encouraging youth and diverse participation throughout New Zealand is a top priority. Aspen New Zealand plans to focus on climate change, technology, and inequality/intolerance, and to engage participants from a diversity of backgrounds, plus local and international topic experts.
The Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, Former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Administrator of United Nations Development Programme, is co-patron of Aspen New Zealand and The Rt. Hon. Sir Don McKinnon, Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, is co-patron and chair of Aspen New Zealand. Christine Maiden Sharp is the Founder and CEO of Aspen New Zealand, formerly Executive Director of the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Singapore. One of their board members is the Chair of a highly prominent and successful Maori iwi (tribe), and another is a Henry Crown Fellow and Socrates moderator.
The Institute’s network of international partners now has 11 partners operating in 14 countries around the world, with an initiative in the UK. The Institute’s network of partners are dedicated to promoting dialogue on the values and ideas that inspire people, communities, and institutions. Each partner is independently financed and operated, with their own staff operating on the ground in their countries. The Institute encourages collaboration between programs in the US and international partners, who provide a global network of young leaders, experts, and fellows in countries around the world and the ability to convene leaders across sectors rather than nationality.
