Washington, DC, January 17, 2019 – The Aspen Institute’s Justice & Society Program announces Senator Jeff Flake, former US Senator from Arizona and author of “The Conscience of a Conservative” (2017), as the 2019 Sandra Day O’Connor Conversation speaker. Senator Flake will address the public at the Aspen Institute’s Colorado campus on July 10, 2019 at 6pm.

Commenting on Senator Flake, who is Justice O’Connor’s fellow Arizona native, Justice and Society Program Executive Director Meryl Chertoff said, “Flake’s record of distinguished service in the Senate, his candor, and his dedication to ideas of civic engagement make him an ideal choice to honor the Justice’s legacy of service, especially in this year that health issues have forced Justice O’Connor to step back from public life.”

The Sandra Day O’Connor Conversation is underwritten each year by law firms Shook, Hardy & Bacon; Garfield & Hecht; Gibson Dunn & Crutcher; and Locke Lord, along with Honorable C. Boyden Gray. Past speakers have been Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court Elena Kagan and Evan Thomas, author of the forthcoming biography of Justice O’Connor, “First: Sandra Day O’Connor.”

The Justice & Society Program has convened individuals from diverse backgrounds for over four decades to discuss the meaning of justice and how a just society ought to balance fundamental rights with the exigencies of public policy in order to meet contemporary social challenges and strengthen the rule of law. The annual Justice and Society Seminar, held in Aspen and co-founded by the late Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun, continues to be led by preeminent judges and law professors. Through our public programming component—which includes the Sandra Day O’Connor Conversation in Aspen, periodic roundtables at the Aspen Institute’s Washington office, and presentations by leading jurists—we bring to the table public officials, established and emerging opinion leaders, and public interest advocates to share their perspectives in a neutral and balanced forum. Our goal is to foster civil and respectful dialogue, seek compromise, and develop strategies for positive change. Justice and Society Program conversations pose open-ended questions, elevate the public discourse, and enable participants to find common ground.
