Renowned Political and Cultural Cartoonists to Appear at Aspen Institute Symposium and Panel Discussion

Aspen, CO, June 15, 2007 – The Aspen Institute will hold a cartoon symposium and evening panel discussion as part of its Arts & Ideas Series. The panel discussion and symposium are open to the public and will take place on June 18 and 19, 2007.

Tickets ($15) for the evening panel discussion on June 18th will go on sale on Friday, June 15th at the Aspen Music Festival Box Offices. The cost of the Symposium, $350, will also include a ticket to the public panel on June 18th, where the “fab four” will describe how they entered this magical world and tell funny stories of their experiences in it. Ken Adelman will moderate the panel.  To register for the symposium, go to www.aspeninst.org/communityevents.  For more information call (970) 544-7929.

The symposium and panel discussion will feature:

  • Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, recently named “outstanding cartoonist of the year” by the National Cartoonists Society, and nationally syndicated in several newspapers;
  • Robert Mankoff, Cartoon Editor for The New Yorker, where he contributed cartoons for 20+ years, created the online “Cartoon Bank,” and wrote the book The Naked Cartoonist: A Way to Enhance your Creativity;
  • Marian Peters, an authority on the history of cartoons with graduate work in social science, who will also serve as cartoonist-tamer throughout, to assure the Symposium does not get totally out of control; and
  • Mike Peters of the Dayton Daily News, also a Pulitzer Prize winner and recipient of the Cartoonist Society top award, creator of “Mother Goose and Grimm” who is syndicated in 800+ papers nationally plus worldwide subscribers.

The Symposium will focus on the history of political and cultural cartoons, and their enormous impact upon, and reflection of, American society. Some advanced reading will be sent out to prepare participants.

The cartoonists will show and analyze their own prize-winning cartoons and the best of others’ cartoons. They will show participants the art of drawing a caricature and creating new cartoons tuned to current news or cultural fads. Participants will try their hand at drawing under one of the cartoonist’s tutelage.
Throughout the two days, Bob Mankoff will display a few New Yorker drawings for which Symposium participants will think of funny captions. Winners will be chosen by our cartoonists, and inappropriate prizes duly given.
