United States Senator Arlen Specter Featured
in a Discussion as Part of the McCloskey Speaker Series

Aspen, CO, June 29, 2009 –– The 2009 Aspen Institute McCloskey Speaker Series continues its summer season with A Conversation with United States Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) moderated by Walter Isaacson, President and CEO of the Aspen Institute. The event will take place from 3:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the Paepcke Auditorium on the Institute’s Aspen Meadows campus in Aspen, CO. The series is made possible by a gift from the McCloskey Family Charitable Foundation. Tickets for the McCloskey Speaker Series are $15 each and will go on sale on June 30 through Aspen Show Tickets at the Wheeler. As a full-capacity audience is expected for this program, early ticket purchasing is encouraged. Doors will open 45 minutes prior to the start of the event, and unclaimed tickets will be on sale at the door.

Sen. Specter’s five terms have made him the longest serving Senator in Pennsylvania history. However, after recently changing his party affiliation to Democrat after decades of being a Republican, Senator Specter faces a tough reelection campaign. In 2006 Time Magazine named Senator Specter one of the ‘ten best Senators.’ Since first elected in 1980, Arlen Specter has brought rugged individualism and fierce independence learned from his youth on the Kansas plains to become a leading Senate moderate. His work as Philadelphia’s tough District Attorney gave him insights to write the Terrorist Prosecution Act, the Armed Career Criminal Act and co-author of the Second Chance Act.

Sen. Specter has a long history of playing a key role in judicial nominations. He was chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the hearings for Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito. In previous hearings Sen. Specter crossed party lines in opposing Judge Bork and Justice Thomas. Arlen Specter has a long history of compromise and conciliation in an ever increasingly partisan Congress. In foreign affairs, he has advocated dialogue and accommodation as an antidote to belligerency and saber rattling.
