Aspen, CO, July 19, 2010––The 2010 Aspen Institute McCloskey Speaker Series is pleased to host Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation, in conversation with Elliot Gerson, executive VP of the Aspen Institute. The event will take place from 6:30-7:30 PM on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the Paepcke Auditorium on the Institute’s Aspen Meadows campus in Aspen, CO. The series is made possible by a gift from the McCloskey Family Charitable Foundation. As a full-capacity audience is expected for this program, early ticket purchasing is encouraged. Doors will open 45 minutes prior to the start of the event, and unclaimed tickets will be on sale at the door.

Gregorian is the twelfth president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, a grant-making institution founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1911. Prior to this position, he served as the sixteenth president of Brown University for nine years. He was founding dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania and served as provost four years later.

In addition to being recognized by many foundations, professional associations, cities, and states, Gregorian was honored by President Clinton, President Bush as well as French, Italian, Austrian, and Portuguese governments. In 1998, President Clinton awarded Gregorian with the National Humanities Medal, and in 2004, President Bush awarded him with the nation’s highest civil award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Dr. Gregorian is also the author of The Road to Home: My Life and Times, Islam: A Mosaic, Not A Monolith, and The Emergence of Modern Afghanistan, 1880-1946.

Dr. Gregorian was born of Armenian parents in Tabriz, Iran where he completed his elementary education. He completed his undergraduate degree with honors from Stanford University and was awarded a Ph.D. in history and humanities from Stanford in 1964. Gregorian has over sixty honorary degrees, some of which are from the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Dartmouth, Drew, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the City University of New York, Rutgers, Tufts, New York University, the Juilliard School, University of Aberdeen, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Fordham University, San Francisco State University, Notre Dame, Carnegie Mellon University, Keio University, University of Miami, and the University of St. Andrews.
