Upskilling in the News: IBM Commits to Skill 30 Million People Globally by 2030

October 13, 2021  • UpSkill America

UpSkill America is an employer-led movement to expand opportunity for America’s workers and allow our economy and communities to thrive. As part of our mission to advance the upskilling movement, we are pleased to share the following news from one of our partners.

“Talent is everywhere; training opportunities are not,” said Arvind Krishna, IBM Chairman and CEO as he announced IBM’s commitment to providing 30 million people with new skills by 2030. To achieve this goal, IBM is outlining a roadmap with over 170 new academic and industry partnerships; they plan to leverage existing programs and career building platforms to expand access to education and in-demand technical roles. “This will help democratize opportunity, fill the growing skills gap, and give new generations of workers the tools they need to build a better future for themselves and society,” Krishna continued.

Worldwide, employers face difficulty in finding skilled workers; according to the World Economic Forum, closing the global skills gap could add $11.5 trillion to global GDP by 2028. IBM’s efforts mobilize the private sector across the globe to open and expand opportunity pathways for underrepresented and historically disadvantaged communities. This will ensure workers have the education and training necessary to keep pace with market demands, demographic changes, and technology progress. UpSkill America studies and promotes employer strategies to invest in the education, training, and development of workers so they have opportunities to advance, and shares this information to inform strategies of other employers.
