Head of Product Policy and Legal Content Moderation, Google, Socrates Program

David is Google’s head of product policy and legal content moderation. His group, an internationally-based team of 150~ policy and legal professionals, is responsible for determining the type of content that can be hosted, shared and monetized across a wide swath of Google products, including Search, News, Assistant, Geo, Play, Cloud, Blogger, ads-related products, and new and emerging products.

David has over twenty years of experience in high-profile roles with public and private companies.  From 1999 to 2007, David served as the General Counsel to Edison Schools, Inc. (now EdisonLearning), a publicly traded company focused on providing products and services for the K-12 education marketplace. From 2007 to 2011, David was the General Counsel and Executive Vice-President, Corporate Development, of Epic Media Group, an international digital marketing platform. From 2011-2014, David served as the Chief Executive Officer of Online Intelligence, a digital forensics platform that provided brand protection and traffic integrity services to brand advertisers and owners of premium content, and also as the General Counsel for a digital software company.

David is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and Brown University. Based in San Francisco, David is a frequent speaker and panelist on issues relating to emerging technologies and content moderation, as well as the proud father of two teenagers, Eli and William. David’s wife, Dawn Porter (also a Georgetown Law Center graduate) is an award-winning filmmaker and the co-founder of independent film and television production company, Trilogy Films.
