Eleanor Merrill is chairman and publisher of Capital-Gazette Communications, Inc. The company publishes the Washingtonian magazine as well as five Maryland newspapers, including The Capital in Annapolis.


Formerly Mrs. Merrill was Congressional Liaison Officer for Latin America at the U.S. Department of State and press secretary to U.S. Senator Kenneth B. Keating.


Mrs. Merrill is Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland School of Journalism. She is an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees for Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Ford’s Theatre and the Shakespeare Theater and serves on the Community Board of the Kennedy Center as well as the Board of the National Aquarium. She is a former member of the Department of Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services and has been active in numerous community organizations.


Mrs. Merrill was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania and is an alumna of Dickinson College


She lives on the Severn River near Annapolis and maintains residences in Washington, D.C. and Aspen, Colorado.
