Rafael Garibay Rodriguez (Los Angeles, California) was born and raised in the innermost area of Zamora, Mexico. As a queer immigrant Chicano, his intersectional identities now contribute to his sense of resilience and determination to navigate the both challenging and rewarding experiences at UCLA. Rafael is an incoming third year invested in the interdisciplinary curricula of International Development Studies, Global Health, and Chicana/o Studies. He has been committed to retention and access efforts at UCLA and the greater Los Angeles area through large-scale programming, campus organizing, and activism. He was a 2016 UCLA Anderson School of Management Riordan Scholar and was recently appointed to serve in the Academic Freedom Committee for the 2016-2017 Academic Senate. Rafael was published in Roxanne Ocampo’s ‘Nailed It!: Quetzal Mama’s Toolkit for Extraordinary College Essays’ and has been featured on LA Times, UNIVISION, and UCLA’s Official Facebook and Twitter pages. After graduating from UCLA as a first generation student and the oldest of five children, he plans to advance onto a Juris Doctor/Master of Public Health program.
